Most business owners judge their website the way they'd judge a storefront - by how it looks when you're standing in it. But your customers experience your website differently: they arrive cold, on a phone, often while multitasking, and they make a snap judgement in under 10 seconds.

Here are the five things that most commonly cause potential customers to click away - and how to know if your site is guilty of them.

Sign #1

It Looks Bad on Mobile

More than 60% of web searches in New Zealand are done on a smartphone. If your website isn't designed specifically for mobile - with text that's readable without zooming, buttons that are easy to tap, and a layout that adapts properly to a small screen - you're losing the majority of your potential visitors.

How to check: Open your website on your phone right now. Is the text easy to read without pinching to zoom? Are the buttons big enough to tap comfortably? If you hesitate, your customers won't - they'll just leave.

Sign #2

It Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

Google research shows that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. That's more than half your visitors - gone before they've even seen your content.

Common culprits: oversized images (photos that are 5MB instead of 150KB), outdated website platforms, cheap hosting, and too many plugins or third-party scripts.

How to check: Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your URL. A score below 60 on mobile is a serious problem that's actively costing you customers.

Sign #3

Visitors Can't Tell What You Do in 5 Seconds

When someone arrives on your homepage, they need to immediately understand: who you are, what you do, who you help, and what to do next. If your homepage opens with something vague like "Welcome to our website" or a generic hero image with no context, you've lost them.

Your headline should state exactly what you do and for whom. "Auckland's most trusted electrician for residential and commercial work" is far better than "Quality electrical solutions."

How to check: Ask someone who doesn't know your business to look at your homepage for 5 seconds, then close it and tell you what you do. If they can't answer clearly, your messaging needs work.

Sign #4

There's No Clear Call to Action

Every page on your website should tell visitors what to do next. Call us. Get a free quote. Book online. Email us. If your website is informative but passive - presenting information with no obvious next step - visitors will leave without contacting you.

The most effective calls to action are specific ("Get a Free Plumbing Quote"), prominent (visible without scrolling), and repeated (at least once per page, ideally in the header and at the end of sections).

How to check: Look at your most important pages. Is there a clear, visually prominent button or link telling visitors what to do next? Is it obvious where to click to contact you?

Sign #5

Your Design Looks Over 5 Years Old

Web design trends move fast. A website built in 2018 or earlier may have design patterns that now signal to customers: "this business is behind the times." This isn't just aesthetic - it affects trust. Studies consistently show that users make trust judgements about businesses based on website design quality within milliseconds of arrival.

Signs of an outdated site: very dark or very bright colours without nuance, generic stock photos, tiny text, non-responsive layouts, no white space, or heavy use of visual effects popular in an earlier era.

How to check: Look at the websites of your 3 best-known competitors, then look at yours. Be honest. Does yours look as modern and professional? If not, customers are noticing too.

⚠️ Reality Check

If your website ticks two or more of these boxes, you're not just missing an opportunity - you're actively spending money on marketing (Google Ads, social media, SEO) that drives people to a website that then loses them. Fixing the website first is almost always the highest-return investment.

What To Do About It

The good news: all five of these problems are fixable. A modern redesign - done properly - can dramatically improve how many website visitors turn into enquiries and customers.
